Princess Cruises has canceled a third sailing of its Regal Princess, which was scheduled to depart Galveston on a Western Caribbean sailing Sunday.
Princess scrapped the ship's last two departures due to a major technical issue with one of its power generators. A technical failure of a second generator while preparing for the Nov. 10 sailing spurred this third cancellation.
With the first generator repaired, a spokeswoman said on Wednesday that she was confident the ship would sail Nov. 10. By Friday morning, however, a second spokeswoman said the ship's second generator experienced a technical failure while the crew readied for the sailing, and it would need to be repaired before the ship can sail.
When will sailings resume?
"This new and unforeseen development means additional time out of service is needed to ensure the ship is fully operational and safe," Princess said in a statement.
The next scheduled sailing of the Regal Princess is Sunday, Nov. 17. Princess did not say whether it expected the ship to be ready to sail by then.
Princess said it is providing full refunds along with a 50% future cruise credit as a gesture of goodwill to passengers booked on the canceled sailings.
The Regal Princess, which was built in 2014, is scheduled to sail Western Caribbean itineraries through March before repositioning to Southampton, England, for the summer.
